Origin of an Epidemic

I just published the article with the above name in the journal, Medical Literary Messenger, about my first awareness of the devastating AIDs epidemic that was reported in 1981 in The New York Times. I started seeing boys in our hematology clinic with Hemophilia becoming infected with HIV through the infusions of plasma we gave them whenever they had a bleed into a joint or elsewhere – the almost inevitable and lifelong effect of the illness. A large number of the paid plasma donors were men already affected with the virus. We took the Education Board to court for keeping the boys out of school and won our case on appeal. But what a hollow victory – not one of our patients lived to graduate from high school.
